Thank you for the link to the musette music. This finally explains the line in a French carol I learned at school:
Il est né le divin enfant,
Jouez hautbois, résonnez musettes!
I knew the a hautbois was the ancestor of the oboe but did not know what a musette was. And neither did my French teacher.
