I don't know, what would you think of a person who called the conventional use of the narrative past "lazy writing?"

Emma's knee just gets worse. We're getting her PE requirement waived because it's her last year and there's no way to make it up --- to get independent PE credit for her physical therapy would be too unwieldy.

I'd think that there was a strong possibility that they were a self-pretentious nitwit. But then I'm an intolerant INTx with two deadlines looming and thus even less tolerance than usual. :-)

I finally decided to stop discussing verbs with him. But what scares me is the guy is apparently a copy editor. For fiction. How can he do that job if he doesn't know the basic conventions of the craft?

The good news is he loves Tooth and Claw. Don't you use the conventional narrative past in there?
