The kids are good. That's because they've had a consistent program in place for several years. It's taken a lot of effort and exercise of community will to preserve the music program, and of course Arnold would like to cut the money again. The music program at Santa Cruz High School is almost self-supporting as it is.
The person they had doing the announcements screwed up a lot though, starting with this: "And as you listen to your fellow students, you can look both ways: elementary students can hear what you're going to accomplish in the future, and you high school students can look back at your younger selves and see how far you've come. You'll ask yourselves 'did I really sound like that?'"
Way to dis the little kids, lady. But it seems to have gone over the little kids' heads -- they had a wonderful time anyway. The grownups, though, gasped, and laughed that harsh barking laughter of the unpleasantly surprised.
And then she mentioned all the awards and honors that the high school bands had earned . . . except ours.
I decided not to sulk about it and snuck up between pieces with a note: "maybe you should mention that Santa Cruz High School has won first in their division in marching, concert and jazz band this year." And the next time she talked about Santa Cruz, she did, and the audience cheered. The kids are great: they really enjoy each other. The little kids were dancing in their seats when the high school students played something jazzy.
I think I'm going to Baycon, even though I forgot about the writers' workshop until too late and I don't see even one person I really know on the list of people who've already signed up. Anyway I think I'm driving a couple of band members over the hill to the fanime convention which is only a few miles away from Baycon, so that they can march in the "Felton Remembers" Memorial Day parade.
