There was a woman interviewed on the radio some months ago who had early onset Alzheimer's. She sounded quite coherent, but as she said, she'd started out very bright and with excellent communication skills, so therefore though she'd lost a lot, she still had quite a bit left. Also, she admitted, it was a good day for her and she had much worse days. But I'm sure your strategy of simplifying, but not oversimplifying is the way to go and it sounds like you're doing excellent work with your friend.
