I think people shouldn't start out thinking too much about what they write. They should write, and then think about it at some later time. So I think you're doing the right thing, anyway.
I just mentioned the gooseberries because of the song. I have a gooseberry bush but it only produces a handful of berries in years when I get tired of it and cut it down to the ground. Whch I'm going to do again this year. When it makes berries, they are sort of like hairy grapes. Thre's a lot of supposedly easy plants I don't seem to be able to grow with my "plant em and neglect em" strategy. Even now, when I've been feeding them and watering them pretty regularly.
