cut it out

I finally figured out what makes the friends view display wrongly sometimes. Sometimes the field is too big and I have to scroll back and forth to read. This is why: it's because somebody included a picture which is too big to fit in a normal screen. Don't do that. I'm warning you: I already dropped one person I was reading because every day he was mucking up the journal so I couldn't read it.

On another front, it is not raining at the moment. There are a few clouds but I wouldn't say they are edging towards us in any creditable way. However, the ground is supersaturated and it would take many days of warm, bright weather to dry it out enough for safety.

I want to sleep, but Gloria's not sleeping so I can't.

I, too, tend to drop people who post large pictures and/or polls without cutting, but you can also change the settings on your profile page to show small placeholder images instead of all images or instead of images above a certain size.

I just went looking for instructions and couldn't find them. Do you know how?

Livejournal's instructions and FAQs leave a lot to be desired, in general.

Go to http://www.livejournal.com/editinfo.bml and scroll down to "Use image placeholders on your friends page" (it's pretty far down). Check it off, select whether to use placeholders for all images or just images above a certain size, then scroll to the end of page and click "Save Changes."

(I know I still owe you romance recs, by the way; I didn't mean to ignore you, I've just gotten distracted.)

Thank you, I will do.

And thanks for the other, too.

Ah! That's been happening to me a lot lately too, and I figured it had something to do with one or more of the entries. Annoys me no end. Going to follow your example and start dropping any repeat culprit -- that's what cut tags are for, after all...

[identity profile] blackoakdreams.livejournal.com 2006-04-18 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
I should be using cut tags too, especially when I write out my longer posts. I just never think about those things.

[identity profile] ritaxis.livejournal.com 2006-04-18 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
I have mixed feelings2 about cut tags for longer posts. I think I ought to also, but I rarely remember. And when you're looking in archive view you see the longer version anyway . . .

And as long as I'm talking to you, you know I meant it when I demanded more of Drew and Jer that very day, right?

The thing about this thing, whatever it is, that you're doing, is that it's compelling -- the characters are interesting and not predictable -- but for poor first draft reading me I'm often bereft -- not knowing how this bit relates to that in the scheme of things and really wanting to. I know, it's a risk that comes with the territory and I wouldn't be feeling this way if I hadn't glommed on to your notes like that, and if I had waited politely for the finished thing to show up somewhere: but I might not get that thing that way. And when I say "this thing, whatever it is," I'm not being disparaging. Just because I don't know what it is, that does not prevent me from being attached to it.

[identity profile] blackoakdreams.livejournal.com 2006-04-18 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yes. I atually understand completely what you are saying. All the little bits and pieces fit together in my head, but when I write things in dribs and drabs, even I lost focus of what is going on and what is supposed to be happening. Like Kings was a great learning experience for me, and Cruel Summer (which shall remain in my heart the 'Fucked-Up Love Song') is turning out to be an even better one, because I'm paying a lot more attention to what I'm doing.

When all the bits are sewn together, I'll be sure to let you know.

[identity profile] blackoakdreams.livejournal.com 2006-04-18 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
And actually, there is more there. I even just now added some more to Drew and Jer's scene, just for you (actually I thought it could be longer anyways, but I wrote it NOW for you).

[identity profile] ritaxis.livejournal.com 2006-04-20 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. I went over and read the additions and noticed you've been quietly adding to the earlier bits too. So now I know that I should just go and check every so often.

Meanwhile, our mutual friend Matt Paz Castillo is well enough to report on his sex life but apparently not ready to write again.

I subscribe to [profile] apod and it's really cool but is known on occasion to post wide pictures. I tried the placeholder thing and it didn't really work for me.

What did was figuring out how to set a style for my friends page. There are some styles that allow individual entries to resize themselves -- so if someone posts a wide picture, that one entry will go long but the others won't. The one I like is called "Flexible Squares". The way to do this is: go to http://www.livejournal.com/customize/, then select the new style system, then choose an entry under "Layout".

Sun today was extremely refreshing. The weather forecast I've seen says it will continue for a while, too.
