Honestly, I think that they're after a total experience for the recruits, where every single input is controlled by the military. In grudging defense, I do admit that they have a lot to learn in a short time, and they have to build a cohesiveness and a willingness to obey which are not naturally there. On the other hand, recent events in Iraq and Afghanistan make me wish that our soldiers were less willing to follow orders and "suggestions."
