Not as fast as it might be, but eerie how it comes back, detail by detail. I thought I'd be writing more of this from scratch. I hope that having written another draft and some other stuff in between I am a better writer than I was when I first wrote this, but I don't know. I also hope that I get new insights, so the book isn't just a pale shadow of what I once wrote but a stronger one.

Cooked a turkey of our own yesterday. The nice fellow went charging up to the forest, too, because it was raining, and came back with a sackful of amanita muscarias and a coccora. Common Wisdom is amanita muscaria is poisonous. Well, Common Wisdom is as usually half right. Muscaria is as poisonous as acorns: you parboil them and they're pretty good. -- the nice fellow made cream soup with the mushrooms, and Zac brought a king bolete we ate broiled. And candy-cap cookies. and I had made walnut balls (not right: I need to find the real recipe) and apricot jam cookies and acorn squash pie which is pretty damned good. And Frank put the ailloli I made into the potato salad and that was good too.

So anyway, now we have too much food and I have to make corn fritters with the leftovers.

I want to write another five hundred words or so, but I'm not sure there are 500 more words to this part.

1125 for the day, 3129 for the vignette: just right.

Next: the second vignette: "The War is Over."

I'm writing these in the order in which they will appear in the book, not the order in which they chronologically happen.
