the good: Monterey Bay Research Institute scientists have discovered a deep sea jelly fish who lights up.

Edit: No, no, it's not a jellyfish. It's a siphonophore, which is a wobbly broomstick with long fringe running off it perpendicularly: it has stomachs, tentacles, reproductive cells, in a repeating chain all down the length of it, and it glows red, which is unusual for a deep sea beast.

Oh, and there's a store which has put up netting to catch swallow excrement so the birds and shoppers can coexist during nesting season.

the bad: the median house price in Santa Cruz County is $785,000, more than three times the national, which is 207,000.

the strange: rotting kelp appears to be an important factor in the bacteria count of the water at local beaches (right up there with sewer runoff and bird excrement).

No, I'm not ignoring the events in London. I have nothing new to say, is all.
