And you should donate to NARAL too. Planned Parenthood is next.

Since I got that nearly 30% pay cut (along with a 100% increase in doctor's office visit payments and a bewildering but largely more expensive and restrictive prescription policy), I have cut back hugely on my donations to things.

But we're seeing a real-time enactment of The Handmaid's Tale here. I guess this particular post is directed at USians, but I think if you're somewhere else you ought to take this as a warning about how fast and thoroughly a political climate can change. It used to be okay for reactionary bastards to make snide remarks about birth control and to chip away at access, but in general access was increasing, not contracting.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I am alive, and my children are alive, because of free, accessible birth control and accessible abortion.

Not long ago, my son asked for a bit of brainstorming on what I could see as developing social issues for a science fiction piece he was working on (his science fiction is in game format, which entails, in his case, about two novels' worth of writing, for background, color text, etc). I said I thought the way thingfs were going, institutionalized slavery looked like a real thing to be concerned about.

This is one of the reasons why.
