Not that I could afford to buy a new game, but I was really really looking forward to Sim City 5. It looks beautiful, it has a lot of features that I like -- but you can only save the game to their server. I don't mind the multiplayer aspect, but I'm not attracted to it, and it's not because I don't like cooperation. I just like to cooperate in a different way. When I play Sims, I am always cooperating with other players, up above the game -- we make things for each other, solve each other's problems, share stories and pictures and all sorts of things. I like it like that. I would love to play Sim City again in just that manner.
The thing is, the real central reason for the requirement to be always online to play the game isn't because the game isn't designed to be also played single player -- it is: you can play single player, but your game won't be saved unless you're on the server -- but as a form of piracy prevention. The EA management has committed themselves to this, by the way, announcing they won't be doing any more single-player games.
Multiplayer also doesn't appeal to me because I get immersed enough in the game as it is: I don't want my playing time to also be the time when I get my social interaction. I need to have my needs met through a variety of experiences.
Oh well. I couldn't have afforded it anyway.
