Katie climbed into the coconut thing, although she wasn't sure she really wanted to. There were seats in it, spicy-smelling cushions in various colors. The Mustard Fairy sat next to her, and all the other odd little people tumbled in after. She looked around for seat belts, but there weren't any. But there were little dishes of tiny pickles and olives and other things she could not identify.
"Hang on, Katie, my horse gets pretty excited when he's on his way home," said the Mustard Fairy. To the horse she said, "Home, Horseradish."
And they took off!
It wasn't really like flying, though the land flew by below: it was exactly like being pulled in a rickety carriage by a clumsy horse who's going way too fast. They bumped and rattled and the small passengers fell into Katie's lap and dropped olives and pickle juice on her. But she didn't mind, because the ride was so pleasantly scented by the Mustard Fairy's own personal mustard smell, sharp and golden and maybe a little bit sweet.
And another reason she didn't mind is that she was getting used to the strangeness of the night. "My mother always told me that adventures are rarely comfortable," she remembered. "And I guess this is an adventure!"
