Maybe "cmdrsuzdal" likes sapient cats? I really don't think that Smith hated transgendered people, or else he changed his views. "Smith's" first novel was written from the viewpoint of a teenage girl and there's a female-to-male transsexual in Norstrilia who was ultimately made a Lord of the Instrumentality. I take it that the all-male society in the story was modeled on all-male prison culture (and perhaps also Sparta) and not a general critique of transgender.
