What American accent do you have?
Created by Xavier on Memegen.net

Western. Like Midland, Western is another accent that people consider neutral. So, you might not actually be from the Western half of the country, but you definitely sound like it.

Take this quiz now - it's easy!
We're going to start with "cot" and "caught." When you say those words do they sound the same or different?

in spite of the fact that they didn't give me enough options. (for example, my correct answer for "roof" is "either, unpredictably)

It came out "Southern" for me, which is of course also correct.

And I also say "roof" both ways, depending. I'm not entirely sure it's unpredictable, though; I think it's at least somewhat correlated with whether it's stressed in the sentence. "He's on the roof" is one sound, "He's on the roof of that house" is the other, pretty reliably.

See also "route", which I pronounce both ways, though I'm somewhat losing the "root" pronunciation I think.

What does Midlands even mean? And aren't you from the foothills?

When I took the DARE survey, I had to answer several of the either-or questions with "I don't know," or "both." Roof is one: route is another: I can't think of the rest right now.

I might be the same as you, with regards to emphasis, I'm not sure.

Midlands is the Ohio river basin, the stretch of land between Ohio and Iowa, culturally centered on Chicago. I do not sound like I come from Chicago. I certainly don't sound like I'm from Iowa, but apparently the computer thinks I do.

It must be all the country I listen to.

Also, I have things to be edited. Mind if I send them your way? And to be sure, what is your email address again? I think your spam filter or mine ate the last story. Which is up, by the way.

Yes, something ate it: I was going to ask you whether you sent it.

Let's try again.
