Hablo Español, more or less.

Today I had a successful conversation with the grandmother of one of my babies (she's roughly the same age as my son, okay).  Truth be told, you'd probably best characterize it as Spanglish, pero it was much more Span than glish, if you get my drift, and I was providing less of the english than she was.

Then, later on, I was telling a couple of my compañeras de trabajo about this event, and I did that in straight Spanish right up to the end when I ran out of verb tenses and vocabulary.

Hah!

This is the fruit of a year of casual conversations with my coworkers, and almost two months of taking a class taught in Spanish about issues in early literacy.  I get lost in class several times a session, but it's so worth it.

For some reason children are outside cheering and screaming really loudly.

A couple of times I had occasion to converse in Spanish with people who had no English. I'm sure I sounded like a halting idiot, but my pronunciation was good, and we understood each other. It was a good experience.

I can read and more or less understand spanish

but am frustratingly handicapped by having French as my first and Latin as my second 'second languages.'

I tend to pronounce Spanish with French inflections, which makes them incomprehensible.

There was a heated exchange between two of the housekeeping staff at work that was fairly mean. But I could not have understood it word for word because it was so fast.
