In MA, the fine for not being insured was just added to your state income tax, and they were happy to just pluck they money right out of your bank account if you didn't pay it.
When I was freelancing, I skipped health insurance. Just didn't have the money. (Instead, I lived in places sufficiently either hippy-dippy or poor or both for free or cheap clinics to pop up.) Lots of my fellow freelancers were absolutely agog at my choice, and would spend 40% of their income on insurance that they likely wouldn't use, and if they did, wouldn't actually pay out as much as they needed.
