The consensus on my urgent capitalization issue is to stop fretting about it.

foo.

Well, I'll fret if I want to, but I'll stop going back and attempting to correct inconsistencies, then.

"let the copyeditor deal with it --" that's assuming that this one, unlike every other book I've ever written, will ever get farther than the slush pile.  Yes, I'm pretty sure I'm writing a better book than I've ever written before, but, you know.

Oh yes. Decide on a scheme and stick to it but don't go back and fix inconsistencies until you have a complete and final draft. Then make the back end match the scheme you picked, just before you send it off to the slush pile and not a moment before.

I can dig up some style guides if it would help...

It's not so much that, as that the decision on whether to publish will probably not be influenced by your capitalization choices, unless they are Extreme Capitalize Every significant Word, and that in the short term, you know who you mean by "the lieutenant" whether or not he gets a capital L.
