What is to be done?

My new next door neighbors  hang out on their balcony every night and smoke vast quanities of very pungent marijuana. It's nasty stuff. The kind that makes you sniff your own armpits and worry about whether there's a skunk under the house. It's eye-watering strong.

The rooms where this stuff collects in my house are the rooms where K and I respectively sleep and work. I think it's affecting us.  I have tried working in other rooms but people coming through seem to think I am fair game if I am not in my room. Also, I think I should be able to sleep in my own bed.

I don't want to be the old lady who tells the students off for smoking dope, much less the one that calls the cops for relief.

What do I do?

The only idea I had was this:

Do you know any serious mooching stoners you can invite over and introduce to the neighbors?

Like, every time this happens?

They should at least keep it indoors after a couple of rude shocks.

I think it ought to be possible to mention that smoke is getting into your house without sounding as if you're telling them off for smoking dope. I mean we're talking about pollution.

As [livejournal.com profile] papersky says, perhaps you could ask them not to smoke dope in that particular location whilst making it clear that you are not fazed by the fact that they are smoking it?

Alas, talking to them is the only thing you can do.

Is it legal smoking? I for one am unsure of what is allowed and not in states any longer. As are most people, one might think, as so many Californians try smoking weed on the streets here, and get busted, because medical or not in their state, it's illegal here.

People who try to surf about here with guns -- same thing. You will get popped, and immediately.

And it's no fun getting handcuffed by the NYPD.

Maybe a variant on the old-lady thing where you ask them to smoke indoors, because the smoke is making it hard for you to sleep, and you don't want all your food to smell of skunkweed.

My hunch is they are smoking on the balcony so their own bedrooms won't smell of weed; with luck they'll be dismayed rather than insisting that it's okay to stink up your house instead of their own.

Have you considered a Super Soaker? (No, not really. But it's fun to think about.)

Agreeing with comments above - you aren't telling them off for smoking dope, you're telling them off for them stomping on your living space with it.
