I did finish reading Makers shortly after it came out. The only things I recall were the body hacking and the way optimism kept getting crushed by big business/the Powers that Be. I wanted to like it much more than I actually did.
Fangirl was totally my jam. I wish it had been around for me to read when I was in my early twenties and just discovering fan fiction.
As far as The City We Became, you might want to read James Nicoll's recent review. I'd been planning to read the book, but after the review, I decided to give it a pass. (Mostly for reported insanely high body count by both sides.)
