I've done both, actually. I've "died" a few times, based on my having some really deep down un-good asthmatic episodes. Until we got the stuff under control, death was a very real part of my every day life, for years. And there were several episodes over a, say, fifteen year span during which, I, well, got down to the business of dying, after a fifteen to twenty hour asthma attack.
When I was 24 I had my Puppy. I remember every minute. And you know what? There was a moment during the labor where I just, well, got down to the biological business of giving birth. There is that "this is it" moment, and to the extent I can remember the minutes leading up to that moment in the asthma attacks, it was the same.
I never really thought about that until I read your post! And, as I mentioned in response to your previous post, it's an apt time for me to be thinking about dying and the way death works. If anything, it would be a good tribute to my friend, who died last 4th of July. He would get a huge kick out of me trying to ascribe meaning.
