The BBC World Service has broadcast stirring biuts of the speeches at Trafalgar Square today. Dang. I want to be part of that. That's civilization. That's magnificence. That's the real deal.

I'd go be a Londoner in a shot, as Ken Livingstone has invited me to, but I'm pretty well attached to redwood trees and chapparal.

There was a train driver, too, who gave a really good speech. I didn't catch his name, and I can't find it now, though apparently a bus driver also spoke. The speech I heard was really fine.

You know how the world said "we're all Americans today" after the events of September 11?

This time, Londoners are giving us a real reason to want to say we all belong to them.
