Every mother's son

Tell me, can you remain calm while discussing with your son whether he needs to be prepared for cholera? Also, I worry that he's taking too much stuff. Or not enough. His pack is too heavy. But what if? -- what if? You know, nobody ever talks about how the volunteers in these disaster scenes get fed.

On other fronts, Emma's fees were almost as much less than I expected as her books cost. Almost. We've spent $334 on the first quarter and she has not gotten them all yet. The Porter core course requires five books and a reader -- I guess I'm glad she's not in Stevenson, which has a year-long core course and thirteen books in the first quarter.

On still other fronts, it's not even the middle of September and I've already made two apple pies and three messes of applesauce. The most recent applesauce was the best: two Pippins from the tree, a Mackintosh from the store, a pear, and unfiltered apple juice. The best apples are beyond my reach, even with a ladder. We should chasten that tree.

A very old friend of mine works for the Red Cross and is down there in the middle of it all and I'M not calm, so I don't see why you should be.

At least the real experts are in there by now.

He's still here. Not having got his phone call, he went down to the Red Cross office. They told him that the central office had said they had enough volunteers, and then told them to start recruiting again, and they'll call him . . . sometime.

We've spent well over three hundred dollars equipping him (according to their specifications)and he better get to go.

She's only asked me about one book, which I didn't have, but both me and Kelly took Porter core, and I'm willing to give her any of the books, and I'm sure Kelly is too.

I know who you are -- I checked it out when you appeared on the list. There are people who I have checked and I still can'tfigure out who they are, but fortunately, you are not so secretive.

I gather Porter core changes every year?

Anyway, the books for core are not so expensive as the books for Calculus and German. I'm hoping that the German books are for the whole year.

For Japanese the books lasted all year and I had to keep buying the reader. I don't think the core books changed very much between me and Kelly's year. At least not Maus.
