A couple of years ago the volunteers at Project Gutenberg's Distributed Proofreaders (http://www.pgdp.net) digitalized the old paper lists issued (twice a year?) by the copyright office. It was a big project, rather tedious for us proofreaders but important in providing a searchable record of copyrights/renewals for the years before the copyright office switched to computer recordkeeping.
