I don't know how many people regularly follow Patrick's sidelights at Making Light, but today there's a really interesting one: Nathan Newman talks about why Ulysses S. Grant might be our best president, and why we don't mostly think so.

The short version: Ulysses S. Grant did more than any other president to promote equal rights and democracy, and his history has been buried and his reputation has been smeared by the forces which defeated Reconstruction.

Now I'm trying to figure out how to get an RSS feed for this guy Nathan Newman. He's hot stuff.

There's a non-full-text feed at http://www.nathannewman.org/log/index.rdf

When I try to use that link, I get a document that wants to save to my computer. Is that what I'm supposed to get? what do I do with the document?

That is seriously impressive. To use an RSS feed, you need an RSS reader. Are you using Firefox or Thunderbird?

Livejournal is an RSS reader, if I understand the terminology right. Anyway, anything that has an RSS feed can be made into an LJ syndication: I've done a few myself, and picked up a bunch that others have done. But I don't know how to do it unless the blog has a button clearly marked "RSS feed."

Go to the syndication page and scroll to the bottom. There's a place to enter the URL.

No, that's the part I know how to do. But the site has to have an RSS url to enter: the regular url doesn't work. I've done this before. I'm pretty sure I don't know the proper language to speak about it, but I do know that if you enter the regular url on the syndication page you get an error message. You have to have an alternative url that leads to a page of some other sort of code to make the syndication work.

Ah. That is linked where the home page says "Syndicate this Site (XML)". The url is <http://www.nathannewman.org/log/index.rdf>--that's a syndicator URL.

Yeah, that's the one I was already given, and it doesn't work.

I just tried it again, and this time it worked. Go figure.
