salman rushdie is on my list of sff authors as well, though certainly not squarely in the "science fiction" bucket. but that bucket leaks like mad anyway :). generally i am more comfortable putting him into the "speculative fiction" category; he writes a mixture of fable, fantasy, science fiction, magical realism, social commentary.
and yeah, i imagine he reads SF; i heard (pure rumour) his first novel grimus was written originally for an SF contest.
Yeah, well, Eco and Rushdie are both pretty well specialized. I always regret not being up to the task of reading them, because when I can read a bit, I definitely enjoy myself for a while.
