I saw the tags "Juan Cole" and "Science fiction" so I googled on them and got this.

Was that it?

...and he includes Eco and Rushdie as sf authors. Hey, Rushdie reads sf--there's references in the part of The Satantic Verses I struggled through.

salman rushdie is on my list of sff authors as well, though certainly not squarely in the "science fiction" bucket. but that bucket leaks like mad anyway :). generally i am more comfortable putting him into the "speculative fiction" category; he writes a mixture of fable, fantasy, science fiction, magical realism, social commentary.

and yeah, i imagine he reads SF; i heard (pure rumour) his first novel grimus was written originally for an SF contest.

Oh yes it does. And a good thing, too, because it gets a lot poured into it from a lot of directions.

Yeah, well, Eco and Rushdie are both pretty well specialized. I always regret not being up to the task of reading them, because when I can read a bit, I definitely enjoy myself for a while.
