Another useless day. Why is it always the Cool Bits that give a person the worst trouble? I heard my son and the fellow who's gone into the Air Force talking about genie class creatures in D&D, and I thought, cool, that's what my guy's ride's going to be talking about, another chance to show How it Works by contrasting it with Something Else.

I got them to explain the whole class, and I can hear in my mind the cadence of their speech and the logic of their conversational trail, and I have an idea of what they said. But somehow I feel like I can't get this right. I've finally fired off an email to Frank and I've put in a little place-holder of a couple of paragraphs. And then I played Sims. I painted a little. I read the news. Cat Stevens, excuse me, Yusuf Islam, is a self-righteous, smarmy fundamentalist jerk, but a security threat? How on earth will the security of the United States be threatened by his ridiculous activities? He doesn't even pretend to be a security threat.

This reminds me of my childhood -- my idol, my favorite singer in the world, Ewan MacColl, was barred from visiting the US for a really long time because he was a Communist. Except you could, if you were really really nasty, consider Ewan MacColl a threat because he had attractive ideas and a beautiful, interesting voice. THe man could really really sing and he had something to sing about. Sort of on the order of Paul Robeson without the added threat of crossing the color line and breaking all expectations.

I said, fifteen years ago, that we were entering a period that would make the McCarthy era look like the height of tolerance. And you know what's worse? We're still entering it.
