OTOH, if the belief thing is really a problem, maybe there's ways to work around it. And/or maybe you don't need lies to produce your best work; there's nothing to say everyone does. I bet some people need to work out what truths they need to tell themselves; and I bet other people need to simply sit down and write and not worry about what they do or don't believe, true or otherwise.
And I feel rather certain Brust put in piece-of-advice #17 for a reason.
