wistful about wiscon . . .

If I could figure out a way to go to Wiscon, I could be part of the reading for Glorifying Terrorism. The nice fellow said it couldn't be that expensive. It's not only expensive, it's difficult and time-consuming to get to Madison from here. Flying from San Jose costs $400 round-trip, with three airplanes and almost 9 hours travel each way. From San Francisco it's a lot cheaper but you have to leave at 1 in the morning and fly to Dallas/Ft. Worth and hang out there for four hours for more than 9 hours total. Oakland is worse.

I had thought about flying someplace close-ish and taking a bus, but I can't figure that one out either.

The bus takes two days each way.

I just don't understand routing a flight from San Jose to Madison through Dallas. It adds 700 miles to the trip. Why not route the flight through someplace more on the way?

Baycon is nice.

I usually fly to Chicago and take the coach. But I don't know if this is any help to you. :-(

You could go on the train.

Or as Anna said, fly to Chicago, that's what people seem to do. Chicago's easy to fly to.

I wish I could be there.

I don't think the train goes all the way to Madison. At least [livejournal.com profile] oursin travelled with me on the bus from Madison to Chicago and was then heading on somewhere else by train.

But there's a good bus service between both Chicago airports and Madison. I think it took 4 hours from Midway and 3 hours from O'Hare.

I just wish I could go to WisCon again, but I don't think it's doable this year. The problem is getting the time off work. :-(

If you can travel a day early, or a day late, and fly into Milwaukee, rather than Madison (and hour and a half by ground travel), you might get a much better deal.

It's almost certainly cheaper to fly to a bigger airport -- Chicago, Minneapolis, Milwaukee maybe. I think Milwaukee is the closest; Minneapolis is about 5 hours drive from Madison.

I find Minneapolis-Bay Area (either SJC or SFO) costs $300-$600,but that's on Sun negotiated prices -- which in my experience means about the same cost as "real" tickets, but less choice. Damned corporate travel agents. It does take a long time, yes. One or two airplanes from here; time goes up in jumps as the number of airplanes rises.

It might even be cheaper to fly to Milwaukee and rent a car to drive to Madison. If you can't find a local fan making the trip to offer a ride, or if the bus schedule is poor.

Wiscon is close to selling out. Seriously. If you don't get your membership soon you'll need to get on the waiting list.

I managed to get from Madison to San Jose and back for the WorldCon with one plane change each way on United. Madison to Chicago to San Jose to Denver to Madison.

The bus line from O'Hare to Madison is Van Galder. The bus line from Milwaukee to Madison is Badger Bus. Both of them stop at the University. The train does not go to Madison.

I don't think I can solve this very soon, so maybe it's not worth working on if the window is very narrow.
