As usual, they have to say, in knee-jerk fashion, that he was forced to pick the subject because of pressure from the Soviet hierarchy to produce something appealing to the masses.

He couldn't have picked it because it amused him, could he?

They like the Monterey Bay Aquarium well enough. And anything with great white sharks or giant squids seems pretty popular.

True enough. Does the Prokofiev piece have a giant squid in it? I wouldn't put it past him. I want to sing the giant squid aria!
