While I like a lot of Leadbelly's material (and "Midnight Special" is pretty much graven on my brain), this is my favorite version of the song.

I can't agree that the Mitchell Trio are in the running, sorry. The Mitchell Trio doesn't beat in the pulse of my universe -- they were just some guys on the radio. So therefore they can't embody perfection, as Leadbelly, who is part of my childhood musical pantheon, can.

Obviously, this is really subjective.

Wow, the quality on that is fantastic! I am really amazed. I have a single collection of Leadbelly a friend made for me probably more than ten years ago and it doesn't sound even half as nice as what you linked. Don't think that song was included, either. Pretty sweet!
