It's a variation on the lottery scam aimed at a more upmarket audience. I'm pretty sure there's a scam for every demographic.

(When I occasionally allude to my secret crime-fighting identity, I'm fighting scams by baiting the scammers - wasting their time and occasionally their money. I haven't baited every kind of scam, but I'm familiar with a whole lot of them.)
