Charlie Stross spent, apparently, more than three months away from home this year. Another person, who I will not name because he has it in a locked post, says he spent 39 nights away from home this year. As far as I can remember I spent no nights away from home in 2010. In 2009 I spent two weeks in Prague and a few days in Florida. But not this year. I didn't take any actual vacations (I took some days off here and there).

Supposedly by the end of the year I'll spend a few days in Southern California, and I'm planning to go to Prague again in the Spring.

I could list all the reasons I didn't sleep away from this year but I won't.

At the height of Artisan touring we spent 18 weeks away from home one year - 2000 if I remember correctly. There were four concert and festival tours to the USA and Canada and a 7 week tour of Australia via Hong Kong. Most years would be about 12 weeks away from home, but that year was exhausting. 18 weeks doesn't sound all that much until you look at it in context. Four and a half months. More than an third of the year. And those figures don't include the UK touring where we might have been away for ten days at a time singing in the south or five days in Scotland etc.

Since we retired from being Artisan and started working from home I have luxuriated in every day that I get to come dowmstairs in the morning and hit my office chair (work) without getting in a car and driving to the other end of the country, or catching a flight to Newark, New Jersey.

I really appreciate the quiet life.
