Precision is sometimes useful, but not always: I get the impression that the various people who are using the umbrella term "asexual" are glad to see that they aren't the only one, and more precise terms would almost inevitably produce smaller groups.
(In the same way, I could describe my sexual orientation more specifically than "bisexual" or "queer," and in doing so would be reducing the number of people who those descriptors applied to. The more precise/detailed stuff is useful sometimes, but not always what I want.)
