Halloween is the safest holiday of the year, but it is the day that we test-drive new parental phobias.
I just discovered this blog via Atrios's link for a discussion of age limits for independent train travel. Lenore Skenazy has apparently written a book about how we should let our kids run around a lot more, and now she has a blog about it. It looks pretty good, though I disagree on some minor details (for example, I think family trick-or-treating is just ducky, though I agree that it is ridiculous not to let your kids go by themselves till they are thirteen).

We lived a few miles out of town. Used to be somebody would drop me off in town and I'd trick or treat all over and then wait to be picked up.

We want Sarah to have a range she can be at liberty in, and that range will increase as she gets older. And she's still a lot less autonomous than I was at a much younger age.

What's really weird is thagt my mother was "over-protective" for her time and I was almost neglectful for my time, and yet my children had less freedom of movement than I did.

And my son-in-law is aghast at how freely Emma moved through the neighborhood.
