Well. The furnace was clean, after 12 years. It turns out that the reason we never had it cleaned before is that it's a self-contained, high-tech, new modern kind that we had installed for that very purpose . . . I just forgot. Anyway, it was due for an inspection. Furnace man says it's in the middle of its life but I do not see myself replacing it in ten years unless there's something wrong with it. Got a new washable filter and a new thermostat. And the filter for the cold air return is the only filter, so by washing that every month (theoretically: in practice, more like four times a year), I'm already doing the regular maintenance that the thing needs.

I have set the thermostat rather cool: I will keep checking in to see that it's not still too cold for the young man.

Of course the dog loved the furnace man to bits and kept racing around and barking.

on another front: tags. Am I the only one who uses them as a vey detailed index? I see other people hardly tagging their posts at all, and when they do tag them it's kind of general every time.

I use tags much like you do. I use general ones (life, writing webdesign) as well as specific ones - this one would have been 'furnace' 'lj meta' to me - picking one or two important points.

Heat good! The first floor furnace in our house got fixed today; it seems to have cost $284 to install a $16 part that I think we have one of in the house. Maybe I should try it myself next time. (I'm a little cautious with devices hving gas pipes that size connected to them.)

I'm trying to use the tags as something resembling a detailed index, modified by occasionally thinking of something amusing to add (for example, a "western science is so wonderful" tag recently, on a post about a medical test). The problem is that I post enough on some topics that those tags are useful as labels but not index entries: using "exercise" as an index for my entries wouldn't work.

On the other hand, I have used "apple" and "montreal" to find things, and a few other tags, including "relationships" and "quote," for browsing my old entries.

[livejournal.com profile] mikz does the indexing thing. I have broad categorical tags for recent things...

Hurrah for a working furnace! And an even bigger cheer for it needing nothing expensive doing. That's always such a relief, isn't it?

Regarding tags, the only things I tag religiously are my photography photo-a-week posts and the Eowyn challenge. (Oh, and writing when I am actually doing any.)

If there is a particular post I want to return to, I put it in memories, otherwise I rely on the search in the LJarchive backup program on my own computer.

Mine are of the very general sort. I had an LJ account for several years before tags were available, and then I went a few more years without actually using them when they were an option. I didn't actually start using them until I wanted to pull all the eye surgery-related posts together.

I think I have maybe 10 tags, of which I use 5 frequently. Most posts even get a tag.

On the other hand, if the LJ import and search program stopped working, I would be very, very sad -- that's what I mostly use when I want to find an old post of mine.
