Livejournal does a pretty good job of keeping up with this crap, over all, considering how much they get of it.

I still like the fact that I can go back and look up entries from whenever, on my and other folks' journals. On Facebook that's so problematic it's nearly as good as impossible.

I like that people can post at a length that makes for actual content, and so many people can join in.

Also, the journal part of it for me personally -- I preliminary draft so much of my research or essays and so on here, that eventually turn into actual drafts for The American Slave Coast and so on. And I can find them easily with the tags and memories and so on.

One of the things I love about LJ is seeing how people I know in different contexts end up knowing each other. Lucy, I've known you for years and years online, though I've only seen you twice in person. Constance, I've known you for fewer years, but still a substantial period of time, and never met you in person. Of course you're interested in lots of the same things! I look forward to both of your books in progress.
