Eligibility question

If your first novel is with a non-qualifying publisher, is the first novel you publish with a qualifying publisher qualified as a first novel?

I'd say just do as you please and don't worry if it's qualifying or non-qualifying.

Oh, it's too late to worry about it. I was just wondering if the award system only admitted that qualifying publications exist, or if it drops authors in non-qualifying publications out. It's not a big deal, obviously. My first isn't award material anyhow.

Shrug. I just figure they don't give awards to newbie older white ladies, anyway, so I'm not worrying about it.

Probably depends on the award. I'm not familiar with the judging systems for the Compton Crook (first sf novel) and whatever the first fantasy novel award is called. The Tiptree jury looks at anything a publisher sends them. (I was on a Tiptree jury many years ago.)

Ann Leckie had several short stories published before her first novel came out, so she didn't qualify for the Campbell award as a newbie (though many people tried to nominate her for it). Her first novel did pretty well in awards for a book by a relative newbie older white lady.

Practicing our understatement, I see.
