If your first novel is with a non-qualifying publisher, is the first novel you publish with a qualifying publisher qualified as a first novel?

Probably depends on the award. I'm not familiar with the judging systems for the Compton Crook (first sf novel) and whatever the first fantasy novel award is called. The Tiptree jury looks at anything a publisher sends them. (I was on a Tiptree jury many years ago.)

Ann Leckie had several short stories published before her first novel came out, so she didn't qualify for the Campbell award as a newbie (though many people tried to nominate her for it). Her first novel did pretty well in awards for a book by a relative newbie older white lady.
