So if I'm going to be in the East Midlands and I can choose any time of year and my time constraints are few, which UK science fiction convention should I try to schedule around? Why?

Eastercon. It's the gathering of the tribes and you will see most people, also there is good program. It's about a thousand people, usually, and there's nothing else even close in size. Novacon's fun, but honestly, the beginning of November is the worst time for Britain, and if there's a Unicon in the summer that's fun, but there often isn't. There's always an Eastercon. And it's always Easter, which moves around but is always spring.

I agree with [livejournal.com profile] papersky. Eastercon is the biggest British convention and likely to be the convention where you'll know the most people. A lot of the old rasfc crowd will be there. The convention is a good size: big enough to have a good programme stream and attract lots of people you will know, but not so big that you can't find anyone.

Next year it's in London, but that will be only a short easy journey from the East Midlands.

Agreed. Eastercon is delightful. Hope to see you there.
:-)
Your other choice is to come in September and instead of doing a convention, come to Milford. http://www.milfordSF.co.uk

If you want to do both Milford and a con, Bristolcon - a small one day convention in Bristol, is the weekend after Milford finishes.
