This is what I want to do. I want my own website to grab and display only the most recent post from my livejournal. I want to do this in a frame (I think) which is itself inside a cell in the table that structures my index page. So it would look kind of like this (this is a mockup only: the teeny lines defining the cells are not visible in the active page). Notice -- no sidebars in this place, and no navigation bar. Just the one thing, that is, the most recent entry from livejournal. Oh, and a link to the livejournal, at the end. I think it wants to be a frame because I think it wants to scroll. Unless I limit it to the first paragraph of the entry and the link. I could do that. What's simpler?

Following the directions for embedding the journal in the webpage resulted in a monstrosity. All of the material from my regular livejournal page was squished into the cell, with the navigation bar across the top. That was using the frame instructions and using the java instructions.

Embedding, as the LJ docs use it, means to incorporate the whole journal as an interactive object. You just want the first public journal entry as text. I think the way to do that is to place a script on your server which will go out and pick up that entry. ...does your server support user scripting?

You are talking about things I don't understand. Well, I know generally what a script is, and I know what a server is, and I understand vaguely what an interactive object must be. But beyond that: I don't know how to write scripts. My server is one of my ISP's servers, or maybe one of several at different times, I'm not sure about that. Clearly, cruzio.com as a whole supports scripts, but what I don't know is whether the 10 mb webspaces that come with the basic account support them, either because of bandwidth or some issue I don't even know exists. That's what I use -- there are six of these with the account (six mailboxes, each with its 10 mb webspace), and I use three of them (one is set aside for Franks Pokemon- D&D conversion, and one is Emma's). So I have 30 mb to work with. Hmm. Anyway. I don't think I'm going to figure out how to do that thing right now, so I may have just a little linky thing to the main page of the lj, and leave it at that.

A peek into Cruzio's site says they offer PHP scripting with their basic package and I think what you want can be done fairly simply with PHP scripting--in about 0.0001 MB, so that's not a concern. Might ask around & see if anyone in your household knows enough PHP to pull it off.
