What's not great is that I'm putting all these words oin the screen but the story is barely advancing. What on earth is my guy doing, spending all this time discussing plum branches and baby names? I'll cut it out later if necessary. Anyway I got the conflict rolling.

The young woman is asleep on the couch, exhausted by unmanageable pain. I called the doctor yesterday to adjust her medicine or something and got -- more Vicodin. Possibly a higher dose. There must have been a drop in the communication string somewhere, because the point was that the Vicodin is not doing the job.

It pisses me off that I can't make it all better. And you know what's worse? She apologized.

I'm confused -- her pain is from the root canal or something else?
I hope she feels better soon; I know it's awful when my kids are sick and I can't make it better. :(

No - it's my dad who got the root canal. I've got this weird knee injury that makes it painful to do things like walk or stand up or even sit in a desk at school.

I'm sorry to hear that. Was it dislocated?
My friend's son had a wierd injury a year ago or so. They took him to a university hospital (that's strong in treating sports related-injuries) for mri imaging and stuff, but I don't think they ever found out what was really going on. Eventually it just got better on it's own.
I do hope your knee starts healing soon.

The nice fellow is much better after the root canal.

Emma's knee doesn't seem to want to get better, or even to level off getting worse.

No luck yet getting another pain med? :(

They gave her stronger VIcodin under a different name. She spent the day on the couch, dizzy, a little less painful.

We don't know what's wrong. Working theories have been blasted out of the water by the refusal of the leg to get better. The most likely thing is that she had one of those unnoticeable little accidents in November or early December, hardly noticed she had any problem at first, and therefore unconsciously favored the leg in a way that made it heal wrong, or not at all. But. That should respond well to deep tissue massage and exercise, and it doesn't. And there's occasionally a nerve thing in the foot too.

We see the orthopedist next week.

Any chance it might be Lyme's disease? (We are very paranoid about that here in PA)

Nobody's mentioned that possibility. Lyme's is not very common around here: we have the kind of tick that carries Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, not the little kind, but I never hear of anybody getting that either.

The orthopedist will do what he does, then we'll see what's next.

Meanwhile she's dropping PE and maybe art (what do you think, Emma?) and spending most of the day in the band room, maybe. She's got word that she's definitely going to UCSC next year -- it's extremely hilly, and spread out aropund a meandering road that cuts between the redwood forest and the Great Meadow (complete with cows) -- but if you're laid up you can get a special door-to-door shuttle ride, so that will be okay. It's the medium short run I'm worried about (--Emma, I'm not worried about the summer job thing -- you can do that mostly off your leg most of the time)
