What's not great is that I'm putting all these words oin the screen but the story is barely advancing. What on earth is my guy doing, spending all this time discussing plum branches and baby names? I'll cut it out later if necessary. Anyway I got the conflict rolling.
The young woman is asleep on the couch, exhausted by unmanageable pain. I called the doctor yesterday to adjust her medicine or something and got -- more Vicodin. Possibly a higher dose. There must have been a drop in the communication string somewhere, because the point was that the Vicodin is not doing the job.
It pisses me off that I can't make it all better. And you know what's worse? She apologized.

Emma's knee doesn't seem to want to get better, or even to level off getting worse.

We don't know what's wrong. Working theories have been blasted out of the water by the refusal of the leg to get better. The most likely thing is that she had one of those unnoticeable little accidents in November or early December, hardly noticed she had any problem at first, and therefore unconsciously favored the leg in a way that made it heal wrong, or not at all. But. That should respond well to deep tissue massage and exercise, and it doesn't. And there's occasionally a nerve thing in the foot too.
We see the orthopedist next week.

The orthopedist will do what he does, then we'll see what's next.
Meanwhile she's dropping PE and maybe art (what do you think, Emma?) and spending most of the day in the band room, maybe. She's got word that she's definitely going to UCSC next year -- it's extremely hilly, and spread out aropund a meandering road that cuts between the redwood forest and the Great Meadow (complete with cows) -- but if you're laid up you can get a special door-to-door shuttle ride, so that will be okay. It's the medium short run I'm worried about (--Emma, I'm not worried about the summer job thing -- you can do that mostly off your leg most of the time)
