I liked it, but I do have one nitpick (I'm a copyeditor; that's what I do): Hawaii was a U.S. territory in 1941, having been annexed in 1898 (albeit by some rather dicey methods).
I knew that, but I wanted to express the difference between being a real state and being a thing that has been claimed. I wasn't comfortable with what I ended up with, and if you have suggestions for expressing that more precisely, I'll be happy to work with them.
